There are many different ways in which diamonds can be set into the band of an engagement ring, each creating a different look. French-set diamonds are diamonds that are raised, allowing extra light to enter the stone, and are set with tiny beads of metal. Pavé diamonds look like they are paved into the band and are set with tiny points of metal. Micropavé diamonds are set the same way, but with smaller clusters of diamonds set closer together. Channel-set diamonds are the most secure - they are held within a metal channel.

Because platinum is too soft in it's pure form to be used for jewelry, it is usually combined with a small percentage of other metal alloys such as cobalt, iridium, ruthenium, or palladium.
