Many people choose to upgrade their engagement ring with a larger diamond or even a different setting, while some choose to simply redesign it. Here are 6 celebrities who redesigned their engagement rings.
Did you know that one of the most iconic engagement rings of all time was quietly redesigned? Although it was a simple modification, she chose to add a few more prongs to her sapphire sparkler, likely for extra security for the stone.
The ring originally had 8 prongs.
Less than 2 years after the proposal, the ring had 6 extra prongs added, for a total of 14 prongs.
Princess Diana received a lot of scrutiny from the royal family for choosing her engagement ring from a catalog because they didn’t like the idea of a non-royal having access to the same jewelry royals were wearing - anybody could buy the exact same ring. In their eyes, it also made the ring less unique. Perhaps she added this minor modification to make the ring more her own. Now, the ring belongs to Kate Middleton.

Although it has never been confirmed by America’s royal family, it’s clear by looking at photos of Khloe Kardashian’s square radiant-cut diamond engagement ring from Lamar Odom that she made some changes to it.
Later, she redesigned the ring to have a thinner band and a diamond halo:
Diamond halos create the appearance of a larger diamond, while also adding more sparkle to the ring. This update was definitely more in line with Khloe’s style. Unfortunately, the couple parted ways in 2013.
The former pro tennis player received an emerald-cut engagement ring with a wide micropavé diamond band when her husband Roger Federer proposed.
Fans were quick to notice her newly designed ring at the 2019 Wimbledon men’s finals:
Her new emerald-cut ring (which may have been upgraded with a slightly larger diamond) features a unique curved band that contours around the diamond for a modern, dramatic look. Here’s the ring at another angle:
Jackie Kennedy’s iconic engagement ring was redesigned in 1963, ten years after receiving it. The original ring featured a 2.84-carat emerald and a 2.88-carat emerald-cut diamond, flanked by baguette-cut diamonds.
Later, she set out to make her ring even more breathtaking by adding marquise-cut and round-cut diamonds to it, giving it a wreath-like look.
The new diamonds added an extra 2.12 carats to the ring.
The Duchess of Sussex received a gorgeous three-stone engagement ring from Prince Harry in 2017. The ring features two diamonds from his mother Princess Diana's collection. The ring’s center stone is a cushion-cut diamond sourced from Botswana where the couple shares many memories together.
Meghan was spotted with her redesigned engagement ring in June 2019. It still features the same three diamonds, but with a delicate pavé band.
Markle received some criticism for redesigning her ring. But if she’s happy with it, then who cares?! It looks great either way.
Princess Mary of Denmark received a beautiful 3-stone engagement ring from her now-husband Prince Frederik in 2003. The ring featured an emerald-cut diamond sitting between two emerald-cut rubies. The ring was chosen to represent the colors of Denmark’s flag.
Princess Mary later added two extra diamonds to the ring, turning it into a five-stone ring.
It’s not certain when exactly the new diamonds were added.
If you want to redesign your ring, it’s best to talk to your partner before doing so to make sure there are no hurt feelings. It can also be helpful to explain why you want to make changes – for example, maybe you want a thinner engagement ring band so it is easier to stack with other rings, like your wedding and eternity ring.
You can also easily modify the appearance of your engagement ring without making any real changes to it via ring wraps or enhancers.
