Melissa Rivers, daughter of the late comedian Joan Rivers, is engaged to attorney Steve Mitchel. Upon expressing her joy over her recent proposal, the actress and television host said she is sure that her mom, with whom she co-hosted Fashion Police, would have approved of her stunning and lavish three-stone engagement ring—and her fiancé, too!
Rivers and Mitchel first met at a Didi Hirsch Mental Health and Suicide Prevention event. Rivers is co-chairman of the board of the organization, which provides mental health, substance use disorder, and suicide prevention services to communities where stigma or poverty limits access throughout Los Angeles and the Orange County region.
Mitchel attended the event as a friend’s ‘plus one.’ While at the event, Mitchel approached Rivers, and the pair, who have now been together for about a year and a half, began talking.
Rivers, who was formerly married to John Endicott, a horse trainer, for five years until they parted ways in 2003, swore that she would never get married again; however, after meeting Mitchel, she clearly had a change of heart.
At this point, Rivers says she is enjoying being engaged to Mitchel and wants to take her time and not rush into planning a wedding just yet. Rivers says she and Mitchel are taking baby steps and haven't made any plans, explaining that if they decide to have a ceremony and celebration, she can't see it happening before 2025. She has also alluded to the fact that their nuptials will be far more low-key than her first wedding, which was held at New York City's Plaza Hotel and boasted a $3 million price tag.
Mitchel proposed to Rivers while the couple was on vacation in Mexico at the One & Only Mandarina Resort. Rivers referred to the day of their engagement as “a comedy of errors,” beginning with the fact that it was on Friday, the 13th. She recounted that Steve was on edge the whole day, explaining that he realized the date only after he planned to propose on that particular day, and asked her if she had any negative feelings towards Friday, the 13th.
She went on to elaborate, explaining that the pair were enjoying dinner on the beach. During their beachside dinner, Rivers explained that there was a boat out in the water that kept turning its lights on and off, and she was completely absorbed in trying to figure out why the boat was doing this and not paying attention to her immediate surroundings. While she was distracted by the boat, Steve told her he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. She told him the same, but she wasn't looking at him since she was so focused on the boat. He finally said, while getting irritated, "I got you something." And when she turned around, the engagement ring was on the table, and that's when River said she went into full shock. She said she was totally speechless at first but then happily accepted once her initial shock wore off.
Before proposing, Mitchel sought approval from her 22-year-old son, Cooper Endicott, before he popped the question. Cooper gave him his stamp of approval while cautioning his mother’s now-fiancé not to rush to the altar too fast so as not to “freak her out.”
For his fiancée's engagement ring, Steve Mitchel discreetly enlisted the expertise of one of Rivers' closest friends, Peter McNeal, at McNeal and Grunberg, to custom design her dazzling sparkler. Rivers, in turn, expressed that it makes her ring even more meaningful, knowing that those who are dear to her heart were involved in its creation. Her three-stone engagement ring features an emerald-cut diamond with a 5.6-carat weight, flanked by trapezoid side stones estimated to be around 2.5 carats each. Three-stone engagement rings hold an especially sentimental significance. From a traditional perspective, the trio of diamonds in a three-stone ring symbolizes the couple's past, present, and future together. Specifically, the central diamond, typically the largest, represents the couple's present, while the accompanying side stones signify their past and future.
