14kt Gold vs 18kt Gold

Gold is a popular choice for engagement rings, wedding rings, and jewelry. The three most common types of gold are yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold.

“Karat” is used to measure the purity of gold. Pure gold (24kt gold) is too soft to be used for jewelry, so alloys are added to it. Alloys are other metals, like copper, silver, or zinc, that are added to gold to strengthen them. These alloys are what gives white gold and rose gold their color, as gold is naturally yellow in appearance.

What is 14kt Gold?

14kt gold contains 58.3% gold and 41.7% alloy. 14kt gold is less expensive than 18kt gold as it contains less gold content.

Since 14kt gold has more alloys than 18kt gold, it will be a bit stronger and more durable than 18kt gold.

14kt gold is the most popular choice as it combines beauty, quality, and great value.

Rings that are 14kt gold will usually have a 585 stamp on the inside of the band.

Is 14kt Gold Real?

14kt gold is real gold. However, as noted earlier, 14kt gold jewelry is never 100% gold as it is too soft to wear.

What is 18kt Gold?

18kt gold contains 75% gold and 25% alloy. 18kt gold provides a richer color than 14kt gold which makes it very desirable. At Ritani, our yellow gold and rose gold engagement rings only come in 18kt gold.

Rings that are 18kt gold will have a 750 stamp on the inside of the band.

Is 18kt Gold Real?

18kt gold is real gold, however it only contains 75% gold since pure gold is too soft for wear.

Which should you choose?

It’s really all about preference, as well as your budget. 18kt gold will be more valuable since it contains greater gold content, but 14kt gold is a better choice if you’re on a budget. 14kt gold may be a better option for those with active lifestyles since it is more durable and scratch-resistant. Some may prefer the appearance of 18kt gold more, while others may find it too rich.
